Mini Maple (November)

Design Statement:

Who loves fall? We all love fall! According to Iliza Shlesinger, all women love fall. Why? Because we love dressing in layers, pumpkin spice lattes, the color palette of the trees, and the smells they radiate. Our project creates this sentiment of the best season – fall.

Our design November the mini maple is the embodiment of a tree in the fall, where its branches are mainly barren with a few orange, yellow, and red leaves. Now whatever season it may be, you can visit the fall season whenever you’d like. We placed it in a clear box to give the feeling of an atrium on display. When the box is shaken, leaves can be shaken, stirred and fall all over. It can be used as a toy similar to a snow globe except instead of shaking snow you are shaking leaves; also it is not a globe.

It can be used as a toy, display of art, or both! To make the display really stand out I’d suggest putting a maple or other autumn like scent near this display, and back lighting the bottom of the atrium box with orange lights to make the display more prominent and feel more fall like. Thus November is “falling in bliss.”

The Process :

My partner Lupe and I started making our mini maple tree by using photogrametry through 123D Catch to take a 3D photo of a tree on campus. Then we started, after several test prints, 3D printing the base, trunk and branches with black PLA filament. We didn't want just a dead winter tree so in order to spruce it up (pun intended) we laser cut leaves from coloured construction paper and glued the leaves onto the tree. We had so many extra leaves that we wanted to make a snow globe and we put the whole thing inside a laser cut acrylic box for someone to play around with !
